About Derek Wenmoth

Derek is acknowledged as one of NZ education’s foremost future focused thinkers, He is regularly asked to consult with schools and government agencies regarding the future directions of educational policy and practice in New Zealand and internationally.  Derek has been a teacher, principal, a teacher educator and education policy writer. In 2003 he co-founded CORE Education, a leading provider of educational research and services in NZ. He stepped aside from CORE in 2018 to establish FutureMakers, an organization committed to inspiring the next generation of leaders, thinkers and problem-solvers.   Derek is driven by a deep personal belief in the public good of education, regarding education as the pathway to self-improvement, and a fundamental right of every human being. He believes that all learners come to class with rich knowledge and experiences; and that our approach to education must place them at the centre of our learning design and teaching. Drawing on this experience, he has co-authored a book titled, “Agency By Design: An Educator’s Playbook” which is available as a free download from the FutureMakers website.  In recognition of his work in education, Derek was designated one of 2008’s “Global Six” by the George Lucas Educational Foundation which recognizes individuals making a difference in education.  Derek maintains a blog on matters relating to e-learning and other aspects of interest to educators that can be found on the www.futuremakers.nz website

About Jason McGrath

Dr Jason McGrath has recently returned to Australia after working as a Policy Analyst with the OECD Directorate for Education and Skills. Since 2022, he has been the Analytical Lead for the Centre for Educational Research and Innovation’s project investigating New Professionalism and the Future Of Teaching.   What is the value in creating space in the teacher debate? How can we move towards a long-term sustainable vision on the future of teaching and teacher professionalism? The New Professionalism and the Future of Teaching project applies futures and participatory approaches to co-create preferred scenarios for teaching.   It also develops sets of teacher personas to encourage a more sophisticated approach to planning and decision making. So far, four education systems across the OECD have been involved in a nine-month study. A synthesis report for the project shares lessons from the conceptual work, synthesis of the Future of teaching studies, and includes some perspectives for teaching over the next 20 years that have been written by invited experts.  Jason has been a teacher for over thirty years. Prior to moving to the OECD, Jason was NSW DoE principal at  Wadalba Community School on the Central Coast. He has also worked in state and regional positions to support school and system development in school excellence, planning, evaluative thinking and instructional leadership. He was also a member and of the ConnectED organising team over 2014-2019.  Jason completed his PhD on the topic: What if Compulsory Schooling was a 21st Century Invention?” and a Masters of Education (Research) on the topic: Collaborative Teaching Partnerships’: Team teaching to support new teachers.  Jason is excited to be returning to his home in many more ways than one.
